I recently switched from the Libre 3+ sensor to the Dexcom G7. The Libre 3+ had a very high failure rate (100%); with all sensors giving regular low glucose alarms, frequently failing before their 15 days, and constant inaccuracy. The Dexcom G7 has had a 66% failure rate, so far; of the six sensors installed, four failed to work, as the sensor probe didn’t enter my arm. It pushed back out the hole in the sensor, creating a small metal loop that could be seen and felt after installation, and an immediate failure when pairing. I’m on the road, presently in Australia. I brought two sensors with me. Both failed on installation. I reported it through the phone application to Dexcom. I got a case number, but so far, no further response. If they do send replacement sensors, how many do I have to carry in the field, to get one that works?

    Oh Jim, I totally get it — I tried Libre for a bit and had the same frustrations. I actually like the Dexcom G7 when it works, but those sensor failures are a real pain. I’ve had to travel with extras too, which shouldn’t be the norm. Dexcom really needs to make it easier to get replacements or local pickups when abroad.

Dexcom has now limited the replacement sensors to (3) per year. Totally ridiculous. I don’t see how they can get away with this. My daughter received (3) in her latest shipment and (2) have failed. Dexcom already replaced (3) sensors this year and will not replace any more. These failures are not user related, but are mechanical defects that I feel Dexcom is responsible to replace. I’m in the U.S.

    Thank you for your comment, Traci — that policy is really concerning.
    Once we learn how to install and maintain it properly (usually within the first month), any failures that stem from medical defects should absolutely be covered. I’m in the U.S. as well, and it’s unsettling to think how many people might be left unprotected under that rule.

    The impact goes far beyond inconvenience — the cost to self-replace the unit can be overwhelming, and for many, the alternative of going without monitoring for even a month isn’t just stressful — it can be dangerous.

    Policies like this shift both the financial and health burden onto patients, when reliability and care continuity should be part of the promise. I will look into this more, as I LOVE the product when it works, but it must work as designed, and not require us to shoulder the costs of out of pocket replacement or going without.
